Biomass Moisture
On-Line Moisture Control
Biomass must undergo a drying process. Approximately 50-60% of biomass consists of water, which needs to be eliminated during burning to effectively serve as a power source. To ensure optimal operation of industrial boilers, it is crucial to determine the moisture content of the feedstock, enabling quick adjustments in feed rate. The implementation of an automatic control device minimizes operator intervention, leading to reduced labor costs. Consistent moisture levels help prevent product wastage, the need for recycling (if the product is too wet and requires re-drying), and the associated expenses related to labor and utilities for resetting the drying system. Whether you are focused on operator safety or seeking to enhance accuracy in product moisture measurements during the gravimetric oven process, near-infrared (NIR) online moisture meters offer a solution. Our NIR meters provide real-time moisture data and output signals, facilitating immediate automatic adjustments to maintain high efficiency and safety in your biomass operation.
Optimize Quality Control
Critical Components of Production
The moisture content in these biomass products is a critical part of the production. It has been estimated that an increase in the moisture content of some types of biomass from 0% to 40% can decrease the heating value (in MJ/kg) by about 66%. Different amounts of biomass moisture are required for different source materials depending on the process being used.
While biochemical conversion plants are able to process effectively only a high moisture content feed stock, thermal chemical conversion processes, on the other hand, require a low moisture content biomass in order to avoid a negative effect on the overall energy balance.
non-contact
Our equipment never comes into contact with the product, allowing for less waste
zero drift
Our sensors are guaranteed not to drift over time – which saves time and money
closed loop
Create a closed-loop process by tying a moisture sensor into your PLC. Full control over the line!
no recalibrations
We’ve mastered the art of moisture sensors – your unit will never need to be recalibrated for the same product twice!
Optimize the Drying Process
Efficiency is a top of the line priority for manufacturers and the dryer can drain a lot of that. Measuring the moisture before and after the dryer allows the user to optimize the dryer settings to save time and money. A proper moisture control system will pay for itself with the energy savings from the dryer in less than 30 days. Efficiently controlling the dryer within the facility can drastically change the productivity levels.
Is MoistTech the Solution?
MoistTech engineers are very experienced in the biomass field. We have developed a state-of-the-art sensor called the IR- 3000, which will optimize your process control. It will:
- Improve product quality
- Increases productivity
- Decreases production costs
The sensor monitors the amount of moisture during the manufacturing process. These sensors are mounted above the biomass and can alert you when moisture levels are above or below the tolerance levels so adjustments can be made, saving expensive problems in your production line.
Assess
Locate the point in the production process in which measuring moisture will be the most crucial and beneficial. Identify how you will use the moisture measurement data for improvements and if it will tie into your PLC.
Remember this could involve more than one installation point!

Understand the Process
The on-line moisture control system from MoistTech is fast and easy to install on your product lines. Once the sensor is in place, you can use an external display or PC to display real-time moisture levels. Because our NIR technology can store up to 50 calibration readings in a single sensor, it can conveniently be used on many types of applications.
