Grain Moisture
Grain Production Efficiency
Most grains typically require drying to achieve a moisture content between 8-15% before storage and further processing can take place. Given that grains usually start with a moisture content between 15-32%, the use of grain dryers is essential in any food manufacturing operation involving grains such as corn, wheat, soybean, rice, sorghum, barley, canola, oats, sunflower seeds, and more.
Drying is crucial to ensure safe storage by preventing microbial growth and facilitating production efficiency during subsequent processing stages. Maintaining proper grain moisture levels and storage temperatures is also key to preventing infestations by insects, rodents, birds, and mites to comply with regulatory standards. Bulk grain drying demands significant time and energy investment. Knowing the initial moisture level is vital for accurately determining drying duration and required heat input.
Optimize Production: Produce Instant ROI
Additionally, monitoring the temperature of stored grain is critical to prevent kernel damage from excessive heat. For example, seed corn in a production facility should not exceed 110-120°F (43-49°C). Higher temperatures are acceptable for livestock feed purposes. Inadequate drying of grains can lead to kernel or seed cracking, fractures, and splitting, causing issues in storage and processing. Stress cracking makes the product susceptible to insect and mold damage, resulting in re-work, increased labor, energy consumption, product loss, and customer as well as regulatory complaints. The primary expenses associated with grain drying before food production include fuel costs (LP or natural gas), electricity, and labor. Moisture content also impacts dust pollution, affecting both occupational health and environmental air quality, necessitating compliance with OSHA, EPA, USEPA and other air quality regulations.

We’ve mastered the art of moisture sensors – your unit will never need to be recalibrated for the same product twice!
Dryer Control
With varying moisture content in grains, on-line Near-Infrared (NIR) moisture measurement technology is a key tool in ensuring optimum efficiency and quality control. The ability to measure moisture and make process adjustments during the production cycle is crucial.
Efficiency is a top-of-the-line priority for manufacturers and the dryer can drain a lot of that. The IR-3000 helps grain producers cut costs and increase end-product quality. Compared with other grain moisture sensors, our carefully designed instrument is more energy efficient and reduces start-up and downtimes. It eliminates grain waste due to excessive moisture content, as well as profit loss due to an overly-dry product.
Assess
Measuring the moisture before and after the dryer allows the user to optimize the dryer settings to save time and money. A proper moisture control system will pay for itself with the energy savings from the dryer in less than 30 days. Efficiently controlling the dryer within the facility can drastically change productivity levels.
